From August 21 to 24 theatre lovers enjoyed premieres, guest performances from Lithuania, Poland, and Finland, discussions, a children’s morning, and even a disco in the theatre courtyard.
Organized by the Liepāja Symphony Orchestra, the South Kurzeme Festival “Rimbenieks” filled the region with vibrant concerts throughout August, culminating on Sunday, August 17, in a packed Grobiņa Lutheran Church.
On 9 August, a new chapter was added to Grobiņa’s landscape, as the environmental art trail “Face to Face with Natural”, created by the Liepāja 2027 Foundation, opened to the public along the banks of the Ālande River. Winding across 1.5 kilometres, this trail brings together three newly commissioned contemporary artworks by Ieva Viese, Krista Dintere, and Rihards Vītols, offering a sensory and reflective journey through time, sound, and speculative futures.
Three works of art located on the banks of the Ālande River mark the constant changes in nature and invite trail visitors to get to know the meeting of the layers of the past, present and future in the coastal landscape during the hike.
On 16 August from 14:00 to 20:00, the leafy paths of Karosta will once again become home for the traditional Lāčplēsis Garden Festival. This year’s theme, “Karosta Stories”, will honour the 400th anniversary of Liepāja and 135 years of Karosta, with a day dedicated to the tales and dreams of the neighbourhood.
A garden party in the courtyard of the Liepāja Restoration Centre on the weekend of 26 July brought to a close an ambitious series of talks and masterclasses titled “From Know-How to Do-How”, dedicated to cultural heritage preservation and sustainable living.
First launched in 2021, this August the music festival “Rimbenieks”, organized by the Liepaja Symphony Orchestra, once again tours through South Kurzeme, offering several refined musical experiences. As part of the European Capital of Culture “Liepāja 2027” programme, the festival highlights cultural accessibility beyond major centres, opening the season of musical activities across the region.
With the Liepāja Theatre Festival Theatre in Close-Up, one of the key programmes of Liepāja – European Capital of Culture 2027 will begin this year – the Open Theatre Quarter.
On 26 July, Priekule will once again soar as the Icarus Festival takes flight – one of South Kurzeme’s most beloved summer traditions. With this year’s theme “Where Dreams Meet the Sky!”, the Priekule Secondary School stadium will become a stage for creativity, movement and celebration, welcoming al age guests for a day filled with bright moments and shared joy.
On October 4 at 20:00, audiences are invited to an unforgettable concert, “Rock and Organ for Liepāja”, at Liepāja’s Lutheran Church. Due to high demand, an additional concert has been announced for October 3.
