17. September, 2026

As part of the “Liepāja – European Capital of Culture 2027” programme, the closing events of the creative residency “Notes on the Margins” will take place in Alsunga, Padure, Nīkrāce, Skrunda and Rudbārži from 25 to 27 September. Five artists will present works created during their residencies in August, inspired by local people’s stories, history, traditions and the surrounding environment.

Martine Lafon – Alsunga

25 September at 16.00 at Alsunga Culture Centre, 1 Ziedulejas Street. During her residency, Martine explored the Suiti community, its traditions and the local environment, paying particular attention to the traditional Suiti costume and the significance of the colour red within it. The residency resulted in a series of linocuts and drawings reflecting what the artist experienced and discovered in Alsunga.

Eva Strazdiņa – Padure

25 September at 20.00 by the granary of Padure Manor. Eva’s residency focused on Padure ceramics – their history, the people connected with them across several generations and the continuation of ceramic traditions today. The stories, photographs and documentary materials gathered during the residency will be presented through a video work, a photographic series and interviews.

Sasha Tishkov – Nīkrāce

26 September at 12.00 noon at Nīkrāce Recreation Centre. During his residency, Sasha explored the surroundings of Nīkrāce, its natural environment, history and the stories of local residents. The residency resulted in a work carved from wood, combining motifs drawn from the area’s nature, culture and history.

Andra Manfelde – Skrunda

26 September at 15.00 at Skrunda Bus Station, 15 Liepājas Street. During her residency, Andra explored Skrunda through the stories, history, myths and events shared by local residents, interpreting them in her distinctive artistic style. The result is a series of illustrated stories, which will be displayed at Skrunda Bus Station together with Andra’s notebooks.

Blanca Prieto – Rudbārži

27 September at 11.00 by the Rudbārži Parish Administration building, as part of the Autumn Market. During her residency, Blanca explored the history of Rudbārži, the stories and occupations of local people, and the surrounding environment. Inspired by her research and encounters, the artist created a necklace featuring 17 pendants, each dedicated to a particular person, place, event or another story characteristic of Rudbārži.
