Z. Mauriņa Summer School. Meeting with artist Anda Lāce and Students from Mežupe Elementary School

On Friday, September 25, a meeting with artist Anda Lāce and students from Mežupe Elementary School will take place at the Purmsāti Library (outdoors, weather permitting). During the residency, participants will collaboratively develop ideas inspired by Zenta Mauriņa’s creative legacy, with a special focus on the theme of friendship.

Mežupe Elementary School is attended by children and young people with various disabilities, and the collaborative creative process will provide an opportunity to experiment with movement, imagination, and performance. During the session, participants will seek an answer to the question of how a house with wings might fly, working together to create a small-scale performance event.

Anda Lāce graduated with a master’s degree in painting from the Art Academy of Latvia and studied at Manchester Metropolitan University as part of an exchange programme. She has been participating in exhibitions in Latvia and abroad since 2003. Since 2010, Anda Lāce has been staging independent performances, most often in close collaboration with composers of contemporary academic music. The artist’s paintings, performances, experimental installations, sculptural works, and other pieces are interconnected, complementary forms of artistic practice.

Since 2019, Anda Lāce has been the curator of the socially responsible Sansusī Well-being Residency Programme, and she also leads masterclasses, both in collaboration with the Latvian Center for Contemporary Art and as part of various projects. She works with people of all ages, encompassing a wide range of physical and mental abilities, and themes of humanity and empathy recur in her art. The artist’s works are held in the collection of the Latvian National Museum of Art and in private collections across Europe.

The workshop will also feature writer Laura Vinogradova, who will capture the artist’s experience within the community in written form. Laura Vinogradova writes prose and experiences the world. For several years now, she has been leading creative writing classes for children and adults.
