“Illuminated Liepāja” Festival of Lights
SU 21-03-2027
The opera storyline unfolds somewhere along the coast of Aizliepāja (the Outer Liepāja). At its centre is Miķelis Pankoks – a fisherman’s son who, while facing life’s hardships and searching for his identity, discovers his true calling as an artist. His path leads through seascapes, family dramas, creative triumphs, and devastating losses, leading all the way to a life in exile and a vision of spiritual homecoming. The opera blends raw reality with vivid symbolism – the sea, trees, hills, angels, and the very voice of God running like a thread through Pankoks’ life and art.
This brand-new opera by composer Rihards Dubra, created in partnership with the dramaturgist Inga Ābele, delivers an emotional and visually arresting adventure and invites the audience into the world of the Kurzeme shoreline with its raw power of nature alongside the quests of the human spirit. The opera is brought to life by Liepāja Symphony Orchestra under the baton of conductor Guntis Kuzma.
