Seeburg Living History Festival 2027. Project cluster “Living History”

“Seeburg 2027” is an international living‑history festival that combines science and historical interpretation, offering insight into the beginnings of the Viking Age and its impact on the Baltic region. It paints a picture of how local communities and early Scandinavians rubbed shoulders, bringing our shared roots and identity to life.

The festival opens on 28 May with an academic conference “Vikings before the Vikings: Scandinavians and Local Communities in the Eastern Baltic from the 7th to the 9th Century” at the Small Hall of the University of Latvia. Historians, archaeologists and researchers from various countries discuss the region’s history and cultural heritage.

On 29 May, at Grobiņa castle mound (Skābaržkalns), the festival becomes a living historical experience, where people can explore the ancient settlement, meet craftsmen and traders, follow an educational route along the Ālande River, watch re‑enactments and take part in activities that bring the Viking Age to life.
