Plan your trip:

Kuldīga region is home to seven historic free settlements of the Curonian chieftains – the ķoniņi – whose heritage forms an important part of Latvia’s oldest history of free communities. This heritage includes territory, buildings, documents, traditions, symbols, artefacts, coats of arms and oral history preserved by descendants still living in Turlava today. Curonian ķoniņi are those who form a unique Kuldīga identity that differs it from the rest of the country.

As part of the project, across May, August and September 2027, people are invited to visit the Atālmauļi homestead in Turlava parish to uncover the fascinating tale of the Curonian ķoniņi. The “Kuršu brīvciemi” association museum is opening its doors with an exhibition, video footage and a pair of talks diving into the history and heritage of the Curonian chieftains. Outside, there is an information board with a QR code providing more details.

Admission is free.
