On 9 May, Liepāja 2027 will mark Europe Day with a programme of activities across Liepāja, South Kurzeme and Kuldīga regions, to strengthen civic awareness and foster a shared sense of belonging to the European community. From 12:00 to 16:00.

Programme

Interactive and educational activities in the square beside the Great Amber Concert Hall (Jūras iela 11)

  • 12:00 – 16:00 Youth-led initiatives to discuss European values, democracy and media literacy
  • 12:00 – 16:00 Four community projects funded through the microgrant competition “The European Dream in Our Neighbourhood!” will run in parallel: “From Field to Table” (Jaunliepāja), “Reflections of European Values in Vecliepāja’s Window” (Vecliepāja), “Create Your Own Community” (Vecliepāja) and “Dream Boxes” (Northern Suburbs)
  • 12:00 – 16:00 Creative workshops with artist Agnese Rudzīte
  • 12:20 – 13:50 and 14:20 – 15:50 Cyberattack simulation by the European Digital Innovation Centre (EDIC)
  • 12:30 – 14:00 Discussion on art, democracy, European values, and public participation moderated by Kristaps Tālbergs
  • 14:20 Trivia game “Faktu Formula”

Performances by “E75 Art Bus” artists at cultural venues across Liepāja

  • 12:00 – at the “Bankhaus” cultural venue, Eeva-Liisa Puhakka (Finland) presents the performance “Currents of Smell and Signal: from the Aegean Sea to the Barents Sea”, accompanied by a multisensory workshop with public participation
  • 12:00 – Sunčica Pasuljević Kandić (Serbia) presents the performance “Earthly Story” and a collaborative storytelling workshop at “Vējš Cafe – Vētra”
  • 12:30 – Tianjun Li “Timjune” (China/Finland) presents the audiovisual performance “Free as Birds” at the “Veranda” art space
  • 13:00 – Saara Kumpulainen (Finland) collects visitors’ sorrow and excitement in the performance “European Collective Tear” in the open lounge “Pietura” at the Great Amber Concert Hall
  • 13:30 – Sjors Hoogerdijk (Finland/Netherlands) presents the interactive sound performance “Modulating Histories” at “Valhalla” café
  • 14:00 – Dance performance “LOITSUT – at the end of the world” by Polena Kolia Petersen (Greece/Denmark), returning to the “Bankhaus” cultural venue

South Kurzeme Region

  • The trivia game “Faktu Formula” will take place at two locations from 14:20 to 15:00 – at the Durbe Cultural Centre and at Virga Manor

Kuldīga Region

  • The trivia game “Faktu Formula” will take place from 14:20 to 15:00 also at two locations – at Vārme Elementary School and at the Alsunga tea house “Sapņotava”

Each year, Europe Day celebrations within the Liepāja 2027 programme will highlight the city’s dual role as European Capital of Culture and as a platform for European Union values in action. The initiative aims to establish a lasting tradition, strengthening civic awareness and sustaining an open dialogue about our shared European future.

The “Europe Day” project is implemented by the Liepāja 2027 Foundation. Total project funding amounts to 28,306.44 euros, co-financed by Liepāja Municipality (16,000 euros), South Kurzeme Municipality (287.44 euros), Kuldīga Municipality (500 euros), and the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Latvia (11,519 euros), with an additional 5,450 euros provided through the German Embassy in Latvia’s “Fact, Fiction and Democracy” project. The Liepāja 2027 programme is supported by its main partner in environmental education and sustainability, AS “CleanR Grupa” Jsc; its main partner in mobility and international communication, AS “airBaltic Corporation” Jsc; and its mobility partner, transport operator SIA “Lux Express Latvia” Ltd.
