The programme “Democracy for Non-Ideal People” invites participants to see themselves as active agents within democracy, offering creative and unconventional ways to voice opinions on current social and political realities. At its heart is the Vaimanu Choir – a wailing procession formed by residents of Liepāja and South Kurzeme – who will take to the streets, singing about everyday frustrations, shared concerns and the determination to turn flaws into strengths.
In spring 2027, anyone interested will be invited to apply to join the choir and work alongside artists to create songs of discontent and commitment. The process will culminate in the Vaimanu Forum, where choir members and local decision-makers will come together to listen to one another and seek shared commitments to improving life in the city.
The programme will also include Failure Stories, in which five seemingly exemplary figures of democracy recount their missteps with humour and honesty, and a Democracy Feast – a convivial gathering where like-minded people can meet, exchange ideas and draw collective strength.
