“Regenerative Textures” explores how the brick-and-mortar worlds we build can roll out the welcome mat for other species. The project treats cracks, porous surfaces, and layered textures not as flaws, but as little ecological lifelines – snooping on the habitats around Zirgu Island (Horse Island), mapping out animal migration routes, and seeing how wild critters make themselves at home in human structures.
The design team “Fabula”, working with the World Wildlife Fund, are putting their experiences together to build on the island two sets of environmental installations that function as habitable structures. The programme includes a reed-weaving workshop, exploratory walks, performances by the Finnish contemporary-circus troupe “Flow Productions”, and artistic research of the island alongside the experts from the “AaltoSiilo” project.
