On 10 August, during a visit to the state city of Liepaja, President Edgars Rinkēvičs assumed the patronage of Liepāja – European Capital of Culture 2027.

The status opens up doors to communicate and represent the values of Liepāja Restoration Centre at European level, participating in all the activities of the project, collaborating with other involved partners, and initiating various activities related to the European Green Deal.

The registration of the Liepāja brand as a trademark grants its owner, or in this case the Liepāja City Municipality, exclusive rights to the trademark in the territory of Latvia.

The two cities have committed to promote mutual cooperation within the “Liepāja 2027” and “Évora 2027” projects through diverse sectoral activities.

An open competition for the selection of the Board Chairperson and two Board members of the Liepāja 2027 Foundation has been finalised.

The municipality of Liepāja is the only Latvian municipality to have been invited to participate in the project.

On Thursday, 26 January, the members of the Liepaja City Council passed a decision to establish a foundation “Liepāja 2027 Foundation”.

At the Council meeting of the Intangible Cultural Heritage it was decided to include four new values to the Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) List.

The diverse programme of the European Capital of Culture 2027 project in the period 2023–2028 will contribute to the socio-economic growth of the city, attract international attention, promote tourist flows, develop the creative industries sector, etc.‍

The main goal of the conference was to strengthen the capacity of European cities to implement the projects included in their applications, regardless of whether or not a city was awarded the title of “European Capital of Culture”.
