Liepāja 2027 and ECOC Echo partners explore the long-term impact of the European Capital of Culture title

1. October, 2026

From 29 September to 1 October, representatives of Liepāja 2027 took part in an ECOC Echo project partner meeting in Chemnitz, Germany, to learn from the city’s experience of delivering the European Capital of Culture programme and to find out more about its achievements, outcomes and efforts to preserve the legacy of the title beyond the title year.

Chemnitz was a European Capital of Culture in 2025, making the visit a valuable opportunity to learn first-hand about the city’s experience and projects, as well as to discuss how the impact of the European Capital of Culture title can be sustained and developed over the longer term.

ECOC Echo is a European partnership aimed at strengthening the long-term legacy of European Capitals of Culture and ensuring that the positive impact of the title continues beyond the end of the European Capital of Culture year. Through the project, partners exchange experience and knowledge on how cultural initiatives, partnerships, skills and other outcomes of European Capital of Culture programmes can continue to contribute to the development of cities and regions.

This exchange of experience is particularly valuable for Liepāja as 2027 approaches. Learning from cities that have already undertaken their European Capital of Culture journey provides an opportunity to think ahead not only about the successful delivery of the Liepāja 2027 programme, but also about its long-term impact.

It is already important to consider how the partnerships, knowledge, cultural initiatives and international connections created through Liepāja 2027 can be sustained and further developed beyond 2027, continuing to strengthen Liepāja and the wider region.

We would like to thank our ECOC Echo partners for the time spent together in Chemnitz, the valuable conversations and the opportunity to share experiences. We look forward to meeting again during the next project activities!
