On Wednesday, 22 April, the introductory symposium of the festival “Atmospheric Waves”, part of the Liepāja – European Capital of Culture 2027 programme, took place.
The event was held as part of the festival “Sound Days”, which has been taking place in Liepāja since 2013 and brings together emerging artists, musicians, students, industry professionals, and other interested participants.
The discussion placed particular emphasis on the interaction between art and the environment—highlighting how important it is for artists to expand their understanding of wind and climate, as well as to seek new ways of conveying these experiences to society. The curator of the “Atmospheric Waves” programme, John Grzinich, emphasised that working with the environment and practising listening can be powerful tools for gaining a deeper understanding of natural processes while also fostering meaningful dialogue with the public.
The festival “Atmospheric Waves” explores wind as a dynamic planetary force that shapes landscapes, weather, and human culture through sound art and listening practices. Liepāja, with its maritime climate, provides an ideal setting for fostering dialogue between art, science, and society.
“Atmospheric Waves” is implemented within the programme “Liepāja – European Capital of Culture 2027” with funding from the Ministry of Culture, the City of Liepāja, and the municipalities of Dienvidkurzeme and Kuldīga. The Liepāja 2027 programme is supported by its main partner in environmental education and sustainability, AS “CleanR Grupa” JSC; its main partner in mobility and international communication, AS “airBaltic Corporation” JSC; and its mobility partner, transport operator SIA “Lux Express Latvia” Ltd.
