On Monday, 3 August, the Liepāja 2027 Foundation, together with its lead partner in environmental education and sustainability, the CleanR Group, hosted a lecture on sustainable everyday practices and circular economy principles. During the event, CleanR Group Environmental Education Expert Ieva Erta shared practical advice with volunteers and other participants on waste sorting, responsible consumption and making environmentally friendly choices in everyday life and event organisation.
“Circularity begins with everyday choices – responsible consumption, extending the lifespan of products and proper waste sorting. The more wisely we use resources today, the more sustainable and cleaner the future environment of Liepāja will be,” says Ieva Erta.
Participants explored how everyday decisions affect the environment and learned how small changes in daily habits can significantly reduce waste. The lecture introduced the core principles of the circular economy, including responsible resource use, reuse, repair and recycling, while also addressing common mistakes in waste sorting. The discussion further highlighted practical ways to incorporate sustainable solutions into cultural and community events, such as choosing reusable materials, reducing single-use products, planning effective waste sorting and encouraging environmentally friendly mobility.
The lecture formed part of the Liepāja 2027 programme of activities promoting sustainability and encouraging people to adopt environmentally responsible habits in their everyday lives. As Liepāja prepares for its role as a European Capital of Culture, sustainability remains one of the programme’s key priorities, integrating environmental responsibility into the planning and delivery of cultural events.
To support event organisers and anyone interested in implementing more sustainable practices, Liepāja 2027 has developed Eco-design Guidelines. The guidelines offer practical recommendations for planning and delivering environmentally responsible events, covering topics such as the choice of materials, energy efficiency, mobility, catering and waste management. They provide practical tools for reducing the environmental impact of events while creating a high-quality and sustainable experience for participants and audiences alike.
