Europa Cantat will take place in Liepāja, Latvia, in august 2027
In the summer of 2027, from 9 to 15 August, the international choral music festival EUROPA CANTAT will take place in Liepāja, Latvia, bringing together about 3,000 participants from across Europe and around the world.
In 2027, EUROPA CANTAT will be held for the 22nd time. More than 3,000 participants – singers, conductors, educators, and music enthusiasts from Europe and beyond – are expected to attend. The aim of the festival is to strengthen the European choral community by offering opportunities for collective music-making, learning, and intercultural collaboration, and to enrich the cultural life of Latvia and Europe while reinforcing Liepāja’s role as an international hub for musical events.
During the week, concerts and sing-along events, as well as opening and closing ceremonies and guest artist performances, will take place in Liepaja. Participants will have opportunity to take part in more than 30 workshops led by outstanding conductors, exploring repertoire from various genres, discovering each other’s cultures, and broadening their musical horizons. In 2027, Liepāja will serve as a European Capital of Culture, and the festival represents an important part of the Liepāja 2027 cultural programme. The EUROPA CANTAT 2027 programme will be announced in summer 2026, and participant registration will open in autumn. Follow the updates for more information.
Jānis Ozols, member of the International Music Commission of EUROPA CANTAT 2027 and long-standing advocate for bringing the festival to Liepāja, emphasizes: “The initiative to host the festival in Latvia – a true powerhouse of choral music – has been actively developed and planned for several years. This is a significant international-scale event in the field of choral music, and we are delighted that this dream will become a reality. In August 2027 singers’ voices from all over the world will meet in Liepāja, and I am confident that the festival will be a powerful affirmation to the fact that choral music unites, inspires, and transcends borders.”
The EUROPA CANTAT 2027 festival is organised by the European Choral Association – the largest network organisation for collective singing in Europe – in cooperation with the Foundation Liepāja 2027 and the Latvian Song Celebration Society.
Liepāja, the third largest city in Latvia and the tenth largest in the Baltic States, is home to approximately 70,000 residents who call it their workplace and place of study. Liepāja owns a rich cultural and artistic heritage, offering a diverse range of events throughout the year. From exhibitions by local artists to performances by world-renowned talents, from classical concerts to lively beach festivals, the city is alive with creativity. At the heart of this cultural scene is the architectural gem, the Great Amber Concert Hall, known for its exceptional acoustics that capture the finest nuances of sound, making it a haven for music lovers. Located on Latvia’s southwest coast near the Lithuanian border, the city can be easily reached via Riga and Palanga Airport, or even by boat.
EUROPA CANTAT is one of Europe’s oldest and largest choral music festivals. From 1961 to 2021, it was organised every three years, each time in a different country. The festival brings together singers and choirs from across Europe and around the world to share their passion for singing, discover one another’s cultures through ateliers and workshops, perform in final concerts, and experience life together beyond the stage. The last full edition was held in Tallinn, Estonia, in 2018, while the most recent edition took place in Ljubljana, Slovenia, in 2021, organised on a smaller scale due to the pandemic.
