Community event in Rucava draws a wide range of participants

8. June, 2026

On Saturday, June 6, the event “Together at the Bread Table”, organized by the association “Kuršu Kopiena”, took place in Rucava as part of the “Liepāja – European Capital of Culture 2027” programme.

Participants had the opportunity to learn about traditional bread baking and acquire the skills of making white butter. Community discussions on local issues and future plans, along with singing, dancing, and traditional folk games, brought together residents of different generations and strengthened their sense of belonging. The event provided an opportunity to pass on traditions from one generation to the next in a practical and engaging way, while also establishing a new tradition of community gatherings in Rucava.

“It has been less than a year since our association was officially founded, yet we have already accomplished many things. One of our recent initiatives was the community event “Together at the Bread Table” which attracted participants of all ages and backgrounds. The positive feedback from attendees continues to inspire us. Some participants have already suggested ideas for future community events, while others are proudly sharing homemade white butter after learning the traditional technique in our workshop. The Rucava community is growing stronger and more connected thanks to the initiative and involvement of local residents. We have also planned several activities for this year, including traditional scarf weaving workshops and instructor-led wilderness survival training. We are only at the beginning of our journey, but it is already clear that when people who care about their community come together with enthusiasm, dedication, and love for their home, they can achieve many things,” says Līga Jaunskunga, representative of the association “Kuršu kopiena”.
