On October 9, at Jānis Čakste Square, as part of the “Liepāja – European Capital of Culture 2027” programme, the open-air photography exhibition “One Day in Liepāja 1987–2007–2025” was opened, inviting visitors to travel through time and see Liepāja and its people across different decades.
At the opening ceremony, Viesturs Koziols, Chairman of the Board of the association “Viena Diena.lv”; Liene Johansone-Kuzmina, Director of the Riga History and Navigation Museum; and Inta Šņoriņa, Chairperson of the Board of the Foundation “Nodibinājums Liepāja 2027” welcomed the attendees. The exhibition received warm feedback from visitors, who expressed their interest in the stories of the city and its people captured in the photographs.
The exhibition is open to the public free of charge at Jānis Čakste Square, 15 Alejas Street, Liepāja, through November 12, 2026.
Alongside photographs taken in Liepāja during the 1987 and 2007 “One Day in Latvia” photo campaigns, the exhibition features works created during the photo workshop of the international conference “Vision & Voices 2025”. The images allow visitors to trace the city’s transformations over nearly four decades, recognize familiar places, and discover previously unnoticed details. It is an opportunity to pause and reflect on everyday moments from different eras and consider what kind of traces we ourselves leave behind as evidence of our own time.
The exhibition also marks the path toward the next photo event, “One Day in Latvia”, which will take place on August 27, 2027, when we will once again come together to create a one-day portrait of Latvia. Anyone interested in photography – whether professional photographers or those who take photos as a hobby – is invited to sign up to participate, so that together we can capture the people, places, and everyday moments of Latvia.
Our thanks to the Riga History and Navigation Museum for preserving the photographic negatives from the 1987 campaign and for its cooperation in restoring and digitizing them, thereby preserving evidence of Latvia’s visual history for future generations.
