Kiruna 2029 (Sweden) Launches an Open Call for Artistic Projects and Ideas

11. September, 2026

European Capital of Culture Kiruna 2029 (Sweden) invites local, regional, national and international cultural practitioners and organisations to submit project proposals for the official artistic programme of Kiruna 2029.

There are two ways to participate in the open call: “Artistic Project” and “Test an Idea”.

Artistic Project

This application route is intended for medium-sized or large-scale artistic projects that have already been developed to a sufficient level of detail. The scale of a project is determined not only by its budget but also by its duration, preparation time, audience reach, involvement of cooperation partners and strategic importance in achieving the goals of Kiruna 2029.

Kiruna 2029 can provide co-financing of up to 50% of the project’s total budget but cannot be its sole funder. Applicants may also specify other forms of support required to implement their project.

Applications for artistic projects must be submitted by 31 October 2026.

Test an Idea

This option is intended for those who have an early-stage project concept, an initial idea or an interest in developing a collaboration but have not yet developed a complete project.

The submitted information will help the Kiruna 2029 team learn more about potential project concepts, partnership interests and support needs. Feedback on submitted ideas will be provided on an ongoing basis.

Ideas may be submitted until 31 December 2026.

Five main criteria will be considered when selecting projects for the official artistic programme of Kiruna 2029: creating a sense of belonging and home, European cooperation, diversity of perspectives, exploring new approaches and the ability of culture to create a lasting impact.

Following the evaluation process, individual and group discussions will be held with the applicants whose projects are selected for further collaboration. These discussions will aim to place the projects within the broader context of the Kiruna 2029 programme, develop their concepts and facilitate the exchange of knowledge and experience.
