The first public online guest lecture of the “Craft + Design” project explores materials research, its application in design, and sustainability.

The first “Craft + Design” guest lecture will be led by artist, designer, and researcher Dr. Zane Bērziņa, whose interdisciplinary work bridges science, technology, design, and art. Her creative practice and research focus on responsive, active, and interactive textile materials, soft technologies, innovative materials and processes, and biomimetic practices. In 2005, Dr. Zane Bērziņa earned a practice-based PhD from London College of Fashion for her research project “Skin Stories: Charting and Mapping the Skin,” which explored analogies between textiles and human skin.

Since 2008, she has been a professor at Berlin University of the Arts, specializing in textile and surface design, as well as the conceptual development of materials and surfaces. She is also an associate researcher at Goldsmiths Digital Studios and co-founder and director of the electronic-text+textiles (e-t+t) platform in Riga. The platform explores the relationship between text and textile practices within technological and electronic environments.

Register for the lecture by June 5, 2026 by filling out the online form.
