On Saturday, 16 May, representatives of the Liepāja 2027 Foundation took part in an experience-sharing visit to the Zapyškis Kite Festival 2026 in Lithuania.
The festival is one of the region’s most vibrant and well-attended spring events and, for the 21st time, brought together thousands of visitors from various countries in the Nemunas River Valley. This year’s festival theme – “Between Earth and Sky” (Tarp žemės ir dangaus) – highlighted the interaction between people, nature and creativity, filling the skies with colourful and artistically designed kites.
Particular attention among festival visitors this year was drawn to the launch of the Liepāja 2027 kite. Symbolically, it represented Liepāja’s journey towards its year as a European Capital of Culture, while also increasing the visibility of Liepāja 2027 in an international context.
During the visit, the Liepāja 2027 team had the opportunity to meet with the festival organisers and discuss possible forms of future collaboration. The experience gained will be valuable in preparations for 2027, when an international kite festival is planned as part of the Sea Festival programme in Liepāja.
The festival is intended to form part of the (un)rest programme, offering residents and visitors to the city a visually impressive, family-friendly and internationally engaging cultural event.
We would like to thank the festival team for their warm welcome and valuable discussions. The journey towards 2027 continues!
