People of Kurzeme Called to Become Liepāja 2027 Ambassadors

12. March, 2025

With Liepāja preparing to take centre stage as the European Capital of Culture in 2027, the Liepāja 2027 Foundation is expanding its Ambassador Programme, inviting visionaries, cultural enthusiasts, and community leaders from Liepāja, Kuldīga and South Kurzeme Region to take an active role in shaping and promoting this extraordinary journey.

This initiative offers an opportunity for individuals with bold ideas and a passion for their region to contribute to a long-term legacy and benefits to their city, county and region.

Residents are encouraged to step forward themselves or nominate someone they believe embodies the spirit of a Liepāja 2027 Ambassador – someone capable of inspiring, uniting, and amplifying the cultural pulse of the region.

Those selected will play a vital role in strengthening the presence of the European Capital of Culture at a local level, sparking engagement, and fostering a deeper sense of connection among the people of Kurzeme.

“The Ambassador Programme is a gateway for those eager to not only witness but actively shape this landmark cultural event,” says Inta Šoriņa, Chair of the Board of Liepāja 2027. “It is an opportunity to inform, inspire, and become a part of the cultural identity of Liepāja, Kuldīga and South Kurzeme with fresh energy and perspective. We welcome both established community leaders and those who simply carry a strong vision and a desire to contribute.”

Ambassadors will engage in diverse activities and play a unique role, voluntarily committing with their skills and interests – whether by championing public involvement, amplifying awareness through media and events, or contributing to the broader cultural dialogue of Liepāja 2027.

Those interested in applying or nominating a candidate can submit an online application between 12 and 26 March. Applicants are asked to include a personal motivation statement along with a short self-made video introducing themselves.

A jury will then evaluate the submissions, selecting 15 to 20 individuals by 10 April. The jury will consist of a Liepāja 2027 representative, delegates from Liepāja, Kuldīga, and South Kurzeme municipalities, and a representative from the current group of Liepāja 2027 Ambassadors.

As reported earlier, this expansion builds upon the first wave of the programme, launched in autumn 2024, with 37 professionals from across Latvia taking on the role of Liepāja 2027 Ambassadors. Through various initiatives over the coming years, they will strengthen the sense of belonging to Liepāja, Kuldīga, and South Kurzeme as these regions embrace their place on Europe’s cultural map.

The program is being implemented with the financial support provided by the Liepāja City Council, the Dienvidkurzeme Municipality, the Kuldīga Municipality, as well as the Ministry of Culture.
