Liepāja Introduces Innovative Pilot Project of Deposit Stations at Public Events

In a pioneering move set to redefine public gatherings, Liepāja announces its step toward sustainability with the launch of a pilot project introducing deposit system at public events, as from January 1st, 2026, all public events within the Liepāja Municipality will bid farewell to the disposable cup, embracing a compulsory system of reusable or deposit glasses.
The first trial will occur during the orienteering games, “Liepāja Footprints in Latvia,” and its gala concert on 4 May.
Throughout the day, vendors and attendees will be invited to partake in this eco-friendly endeavour, where every beverage outlet will offer reusable glassware for a nominal deposit of €1. Once acquired, these reusable items grant unlimited refills throughout the event, with no additional deposit required. Upon return, the deposit is promptly refunded, fostering a circular economy where waste is minimized, and sustainability thrives.
Embracing this initiative extends beyond the event itself; attendees are encouraged to carry their reusable glasses or mugs into their daily lives, promoting an environmentally conscious lifestyle with every sip.In echoing the global and European sentiment towards sustainability, Liepāja stands committed to reducing single-use packaging, affirming its pledge towards a greener tomorrow.
Regardless of single-use cup material composition, the production process itself consumes precious resources. Furthermore, once used, these cups pose a significant challenge. Recycling them is often impractical, leaving landfills as their final, and unwelcome, destination. The environmental cost is a heavy burden, with these single-use vessels taking hundreds of years to decompose, fragmenting into microplastics that pollute our ecosystems.
This initiative not only mitigates the environmental impact of disposable cups but also fosters a culture of conscientious consumption. By encouraging the reuse of glassware, Liepāja champions a sustainable model where every action contributes to a brighter, cleaner future.
How does it work?
The mechanics of deposit system during the event:
- Upon purchase, attendees receive a reusable glass or mug in exchange for a €1 deposit.
- Enjoy unlimited refills throughout the event without additional fees.
- To refresh your drink, simply exchange your used vessel for a clean one with any vendor.
- At the end of the event, return your used glass or mug to reclaim your deposit.
- Opt to keep your glass, take it home as a memento of your commitment to the cause. Alternatively, by returning it, you contribute directly to reducing waste.
This initiative is a cornerstone of the “Liepāja Smart City Roadmap” project, made possible through collaboration with Valencia, Spain, under the auspices of the European Union.Find out more about this project at: www.liepaja.lv
