Liepāja blossoms — quite literally — as the Liepāja Blossoms! campaign is in full swing, celebrating the city’s 400th anniversary. Organised by the Liepāja 2027 foundation, this city-wide greening and community engagement initiative began with a seedling exchange on 1 May and will culminate in a collective planting event next Friday, 9 May.
The campaign invites everyone to join in creating a greener and attractive environment — together. At the recent seedling exchange point, locals and visitors donated home-grown seedlings as gifts to the city. These plants, lovingly cultivated in homes and gardens, will now be planted in public green spaces. Liepāja’s city gardener is collecting the donated seedlings in preparation for the upcoming large-scale planting, which will be done in partnership with residents and community members.
On Friday, 9 May, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., residents are invited to roll up their sleeves and get their hands in the soil. Together with the city’s gardeners, planting will take place across different residential districts of Liepāja:
- At 11:00 a.m., planting begins in the Northern Suburbs (“ZIemeļu priekšpilsēta”, Ventspils Street park location).
- At 11:30 a.m., the action continues in “Jaunliepāja” district (Raiņa Park) and Karosta (Lāčplēšis Garden).
- At 12:00 p.m., planting starts in the city centre near the Great Amber Concert Hall, as well as in the “Dienvidrietumu” residential district (intersection of Venta and Klaipēdas Streets).
- Finally, at 12:30 p.m., the “Ezerkrasts” residential district (intersection of Zirņu and Ganību Streets) will join the campaign.
Everyone is welcome to participate — no prior registration is needed. Just bring a planting trowel and a willingness to help the city blossom.
Later that day, at 3:00 p.m., Liepāja Blossoms! will mark Forest Day with the planting of 50 decorative apple trees alongside the Liepāja port promenade. Organised in collaboration with State JSC Latvian National Forests (“Latvijas valsts meži”), this symbolic gesture honours the city’s past and looks to a greener future. Individuals and groups wishing to take part in the apple tree planting are invited to register here.
The Liepāja Blossoms! campaign is part of a wider programme of environmental initiatives marking the city’s 400th anniversary. It is organised by the Liepāja 2027 foundation in cooperation with the Liepāja City Council’s Municipal Administration and Education Department, Liepāja Peter’s Market, LUX Express, and AS Latvijas Valsts meži as part of the national Forest Days celebration.
