Liepāja 2027 invites to a masterclass on eco-design in events

29. August, 2025

On 9 September 2025 at 14:00, the Liepāja 2027 Foundation opens its doors at Dārza Street 4/8 and welcomes all to the masterclass “Eco-design in Events” led by researcher Kitija Balcare, Ph.D. (c.), who will guide us through the art of designing with responsibility.

For three hours, participants will explore how eco-design can shape cultural processes today and tomorrow, find out about current practical guidelines and examples, and discuss the well-being of people and the environment on Liepāja’s journey to the European Capital of Culture 2027.

The subsequent stage in the process after this session and the creative workshops will be the delivery of the Eco-design Guidelines, which will be written by the researcher Kitija Balcere. These Guidelines are intended to serve as recommendations for cultural event organisers, to promote the utilisation of a range of eco-design solutions and to underscore Liepāja’s dedication as the European Capital of Culture 2027 to the advancement of sustainability and ecologically responsible design.

“When we speak of sustainability, we don’t mean restrictions – we mean possibilities,” stresses Inta Šoriņa, Chair of the Liepāja 2027 Board. “These guidelines are meant to be a companion to organisers, offering practical ways to host events that enrich people while treading lightly on nature”.

Through lectures, creative workshops and inspiring case studies, participants will discover how to weave ecological thinking into every stage of event creation – from choosing sustainable materials and long-term design solutions to reducing waste, rethinking transport and speaking to audiences with eco-friendly communication.

Kitija Balcare, Ph.D. (c.), is a researcher at the Institute of Literature, Folklore and Art of the University of Latvia, a lecturer at the Latvian Academy of Culture, and Head of the Scientific Committee of the European project STAGES (Sustainable Theatre Alliance for a Green Environmental Shift). Her work bridges culture and sustainability, exploring how art, activism and ecological awareness can meet in the same space.
