Liepāja 2027 brought summer warmth to the Oulu 2026 opening in Finland

19. January, 2026

On 16 and 17 January, the Liepāja 2027 Foundation took part in the official opening festival of Oulu – European Capital of Culture 2026 in Finland. As part of the programme, Liepāja 2027 presented an interactive stand, “Liepāja Culture Glows with Warmth”, inviting festival visitors to experience the spirit of Liepāja and its summer atmosphere in the heart of the Nordic winter.

Over two days, guests were invited to discover the energy, creativity and warmth of the Latvian coastal city through a creatively designed Liepāja 2027 space. The stand was transformed into a summer oasis, featuring soft, warm lighting, sand underfoot and visual projections of Liepāja’s natural landscapes, creating a welcoming, inspiring and lively vibe.

Visitors were encouraged to experience Liepāja with all their senses – seeing, hearing, tasting and feeling the essence of the city and its culture. The stand offered an engaging encounter with Liepāja 2027, presenting culture as a force that glowed with warmth, inspired and brought people together.

During the Oulu 2026 opening festival, Liepāja 2027 introduced the city as the European Capital of Culture 2027, presenting Liepāja’s cultural and tourism offer as well as the concept and goals of the (un)rest programme.

The programme was enriched by kokle music and traditional Latvian folk dances, inviting visitors to learn traditional steps and explore Latvia’s cultural heritage. Live music and movement created a strong sense of togetherness, encouraging visitors not only to observe but also to actively participate and experience the warmth of Liepāja’s culture.

We sincerely thank the Oulu 2026 team for their warm hospitality and excellent cooperation, as well as the visitors for their positive feedback. We wish the Oulu 2026 team a fulfilling, inspiring and vibrant year ahead, proudly carrying the title of European Capital of Culture and creating unforgettable cultural experiences for both local residents and guests from around the world.
