Liepāja 2027 Supervisory Board meeting held at the Ministry of Culture

30. April, 2025

Today, on April 30th, the Supervisory Board of the project ‘Liepāja – European Capital of Culture 2027’ convened for its regular meeting at the Ministry of Culture.

During the session, board members were introduced to the programme content for Kuldīga and South Kurzeme (Dienvidkurzeme) within the project framework, received a progress report on the implementation process — including efforts to strengthen the project team’s capacity — and were updated on the programme’s communication, sponsorship, and international relations plans.

The board is chaired by the Minister of Culture and includes the ministers of finance, economics, foreign affairs, environmental protection and regional development, and transport; the President’s adviser on communication; the Director of the Investment and Development Agency of Latvia; the Head of the Kurzeme Planning Region Administration; the Chairmen of the municipal councils of Liepāja city, South Kurzeme, and Kuldīga; and the Director of the public policy think tank PROVIDUS.

The board was established by a decree of President Edgars Rinkēvičs to oversee the preparation and implementation of this significant project and to coordinate cooperation among the involved institutions. Its key tasks are:

  • to monitor the content, financial expenditures, and outcomes of the project,
  • to oversee the use of the allocated state co-financing,
  • to provide recommendations on various aspects of project preparation and implementation,
  • and to ensure effective communication between Liepāja City, South Kurzeme and Kuldīga municipalities, the Cabinet of Ministers, state institutions, other local governments, businesses, and NGOs involved in the project.
