Liepāja’s 400th jubilee has been marked by the spectacular concert performance “Personal Code: Liepāja”

This evening, on March 18, thousands of Liepāja residents gathered in the square by the Concert Hall “Great Amber” to celebrate the city’s 400th anniversary, experiencing the grand festive concert “Personal Code: Liepāja”!

Video greetings from well-known musicians, artists, actors, and professionals from all around the world invited the audience to come closer to the impressive stage, sending their birthday wishes to Liepāja.

The evening opened with the sounds of ship horns from the canal and the chimes of Liepāja’s church bells echoing across the city—from Jaunliepāja to Vecliepāja, from the sea to the lake.

The iconic “Pūt, vējiņi” was performed tonight by an equally iconic guitarist ensemble—Ainars Virga, Armands Alksnis, Roberts Dinters, and Jānis Kalniņš.

The premiere of the song cycle “Lake. Sea. Liepāja” followed, created especially for this event by composer Uldis Marhilēvičs and poet Guntars Račs. “It tells the story of the tranquil Liepāja Lake falling in love with the roaring sea and searching for a way to reach her,” reveal the authors of the five-song cycle. The leading roles were entrusted to singers Ivo Fomins (as the lake) and Aija Andrejeva (as the sea).

The program continued with beloved classics—a selection of songs by the band “Līvi” performed by Igo, Ainars Virga, Ivo Fomins, Andris Ērglis, and Uldis Marhilēvičs, as well as an Imants Kalniņš medley brought to life by “Carnival Youth” and Shipsea. We also enjoyed Ance Krauze’s vocals in “Tu esi mans draugs” by the band “Tumsa.” Together, we sang Liepāja’s anthem, “Pilsētā, kurā piedzimst vējš,” and were touched by the heartfelt compositions of Jānis Lūsēns, Jānis Strazds, and Zigmārs Liepiņš.

The concert performance was hosted by actors Agnese Jēkabsone and Mārtiņš Vilsons, with choreography by Liene Grava and participation from various creative groups from Liepāja.

The evening concluded with all the artists and the audience singing together to Imants Kalniņš’ legendary “Liedagā.”

The concert recording will be broadcast on LTV1 on April 20.
