
In Q3 2024, the number of foreign visitors to Liepāja increased by 16.6%

The 2024 third quarter (Q3) data from the Central Statistical Office and the Liepāja Region Tourism Information Office reveal a positive trend in tourism, with a 16.6% rise in the number of foreign guests choosing Liepāja as their destination and overnight stay.
Between July and September 2024, Liepāja accommodation hosted 43,906 guests—1.6% more than in the same period last year and 18.7% more than in Q3 2019. Overnight stays totalled 81,545, marking a 5.8% increase. The average length of stay also saw a slight rise to 1.86 nights per guest, up by 0.08 nights from the previous year.
Accommodation occupancy rates remained strong, with guest rooms averaging 53% occupancy and beds at 45%. August was the peak month, with room occupancy reaching 62.6% and bed occupancy at 54.9%.
Domestic tourism remained stable, with 23,149 Latvian visitors staying in Liepāja accommodation, averaging 1.81 nights per stay—0.07 nights longer than last year. Meanwhile, international tourism saw a notable rise, with 20,757 foreign guests—a 16.6% increase compared to Q3 2023. Foreign visitors also extended their stays, spending an average of 1.91 nights, reflecting a 20.1% increase in total overnight stays.
Visitors from 81 different countries explored Liepāja in Q3 2024. Lithuanian tourists led the rankings with 9,287 overnight stays, a 6.1% increase. Germany followed with 3,242 overnight stays (+31.8%), while Estonia recorded 1,356 stays (+22.4%). Poland (+44.9%), Finland (+13.2%), France (+56.3%), Denmark (-8.8%), the UK (+7.1%), the USA (+77.4%), and the Netherlands (+9.9%) rounded out the top ten source markets.
The Liepāja Region Tourism Information Office also experienced heightened activity, welcoming 6,374 visitors in Q3 2024. Of these, 60% were international tourists, while 21% were Liepāja locals and 19% were Latvian visitors. During the summer months, the most frequent visitors came from Lithuania, Germany, France, the USA, and Poland.
