Call for Participation in the City Greening Campaign “Liepāja Blossoms”
To inspire the local community to create a greener, more colourful city, the Foundation “Liepāja 2027” invites all Liepāja residents to take part in the “Liepāja Blossoms” campaign. In honour of the city’s 400th anniversary, this initiative encourages everyone to participate in planting, exchanging seedlings, and other greening activities, bringing life and colour to the urban environment.
From March to May, a series of events will offer opportunities for residents to actively shape their surroundings, strengthening both community ties and civic pride.
“Last year, we asked Liepāja residents how they’d like to celebrate our city’s 400th anniversary. A 17.5% feedback said they wanted to do it through urban greening activities. Taking this to heart, we’ve organized a series of events to give everyone the chance to roll up their sleeves, plant something beautiful, and make a lasting impact. Liepāja flourishes when each of us contributes our time, care, and effort. By creating blooming neighbourhoods, we not only enhance the beauty of our city but also foster a deeper connection to the place we call home. In this anniversary year, we invite everyone to experience the joy of planting, to transform everyday spaces into living celebrations, and to take part in a collective effort that will leave a lasting mark on our city’s landscape. Let us come together across generations, uniting in a shared vision for a greener, more colourful Liepāja in its 400th year,” says Inta Šoriņa, Chairperson of the Liepāja 2027 Board.
The campaign launches on Saturday, 8 March, from 10:00 to 14:00 at Liepāja Peter’s Market, where visitors can collect flower seeds and receive practical advice on plant care by stopping at the “Liepāja 2027” stand.
Participants are encouraged to plant and nurture the seeds in their own backyards and neighbourhoods or bring their seedlings to the plant exchange event in May.
On Thursday, 1 May, from 10:00 to 14:00, the Liepāja Latvian Society House will host a plant exchange event, where residents can share, trade, gift, or receive new plants, expanding the diversity of greenery throughout the city.
In April and May, the Liepāja Education Development and Methodological Support Centre will organise lectures on gardening for adult learners, offering valuable knowledge for both experienced and aspiring gardeners. Joining the efforts, the Liepāja Tourist Information Office will lead guided tours exploring the city’s distinctive trees and green spaces.
On Friday, 9 May, a large-scale community planting event will take place, with residents working alongside city gardeners to embellish Liepāja with lush red and white flowers, including asters, zinnias, dahlias, cosmos, phlox, lobularia, and white gaura (Gaura lindheimeri). These lively blooms will catch eyes, infusing the city with colour and a festive charm. Additionally, fifty ornamental apple trees will take root, shaping a new lush green space that will flourish for years to come.
