A local plan for the largest industriala rea in Latvia will soon be submitted for public deliberation and willde termine the future of an important part of Liepāja (more than 120 ha) – the industrial zone.
Latvia is moving towards more responsible and greenerproduction, and the Liepāja development plan also envisages opening up thispreviously closed territory to the public and developing a green and modernindustrial park.
On 20th October, the “Greatamber” concert hall hosted a forum “Latvia on the way to responsible, greener manufacturing – a start in Liepāja”, where we heard several proposals about how to develop this area more successfully, including the context of Liepāja’s entry in the 2nd round of the European Capital of Culture2027 competition.
Inta Šoriņa, the Liepāja’s applicationfor the title of European Capital of Culture 2027 project manager, told us about the experience of other European countries, on how other cities have integrated culture in the post-industrial space and reminded that the most important thing in this whole process is a person and how the society will accept and feel withinthis environment.
The discussion also included:
- the vision of the City of Liepāja and the Liepāja SEZ on the development of the former steel plant site
- the recommendations of Mārtiņš Zemītis, Deputy Head of the European Commission Representation in Latvia, onwhat should be considered for the development of the Liepāja Industrial Park interms of the European Green Deal
- Ieva Kustova, Head of Sustainability Services, KPMG Baltics, Latvia, presented the development perspectives of theGreen Industrial Park and its potential contribution to the national economy
- Arnis Škapars, Member of the Board ofSEB Bank, shared his experience on green transformation, the role of banks and opportunities for entrepreneurs
- Uģis Kaugurs, Liepāja City Architect, presented the development opportunities of the former “Liepāja Metalurgs” steel plant site in the urban environment
- Elita Baklāne-Ansberga, DirectorGeneral of the State Environmental Service, explained the importance ofenvironmental aspects in the development of the historic factory site.
