On Saturday, August 29, in the Polīšu ravines of Vārme Parish, Kuldīga Municipality, as part of the “Liepāja – European Capital of Culture 2027” community programme, a leisurely walk took place along the Šķēde River and the surrounding steep sandstone outcrops. Participants were invited to explore the scenic surroundings at a leisurely pace, allowing the landscape and natural environment to set the pace of the walk.
Rain and wet weather led to changes in the originally planned programme – the planned sound performance in the forest was relocated to a wooden shed at the edge of the forest. There, the freely improvised music of Ance Jankovska and Santa Kauliņa intertwined with the sounds of the surrounding environment, creating a peaceful and flowing atmosphere.
The vocal and piano improvisation was shaped by attuning to the sensations of that particular moment and the sounds of the natural environment. After the walk, it gave participants the opportunity to pause, relax, and surrender to the interplay of music and nature. A rainbow that appeared over the surrounding area during the improvisation lent a special atmosphere to the evening, becoming a beautiful continuation of the musical experience.
The event concluded with several songs featuring a warm and rhythmic regional character, complementing the evening’s musical programme and providing a cheerful finale to our evening in nature.
The event offered an opportunity not only to explore the scenic surroundings of Polīšu ravines, but also to experience the interplay of nature, walking, and music, allowing participants to pause for a moment amid the hustle and bustle of daily life, listen, and be fully present.
