Starting June 1, Kuldīga will offer two new cultural tourism experiences focused on the town’s UNESCO World Heritage values. Developed as part of the project “(un)rest in Kuldīga: The Living Old Town” within the “Liepāja – European Capital of Culture 2027” programme, the initiative is implemented by the event and tourism company “Idea Events.” Its aim is to deepen public understanding of the unique heritage of Kuldīga’s Old Town through research-based, engaging, and accessible experiences.
Kuldīga’s Old Town is a world-class treasure, yet many visitors ask: “Where exactly is the UNESCO site, and what makes it so special?” To answer these questions in an accessible, creative, and engaging way, Kuldīga is launching two new cultural tourism experiences on June 1, 2026. Created as a part of the project “(un)rest in Kuldīga: The Living Old Town,” the offerings include a research-based guided tour and a full-day adventure that transform Kuldīga’s UNESCO World Heritage values into an immersive and memorable experience.
UNESCO Tour: The Living Old Town
More than a guided walk, “The Living Old Town” is an immersive experience designed for both school groups and adults, inviting participants to discover Kuldīga’s historic environment firsthand. The route leads visitors to unusual locations across the town, offering opportunities to explore hidden corners, “step inside” a historic chimney, and uncover details that often go unnoticed in everyday life. While the tour is engaging, interactive, and full of adventure, it is grounded in professionally developed research and storytelling. Participants will gain a deeper, fact-based understanding of the values that earned Kuldīga’s Old Town its UNESCO World Heritage status.
Experience the City’s Creative Spirit: A UNESCO Day Adventure
Created in close collaboration with groups of friends, corporate teams, and local businesses, this full-day adventure combines cultural heritage exploration with contemporary creativity. Participants will discover how Kuldīga’s historic environment continues to inspire life in the town today. Each group will receive a personalized programme tailored to its interests. Along the way, participants will have the opportunity to meet local residents and inspiring community members, take part in an engaging city-wide scavenger hunt, learn the story of coffee at a local roastery, explore the Old Town by walking along the Alekšupīte riverbed, test their knowledge in a lively trivia challenge, and enjoy many other unique experiences that Kuldīga has to offer.
Experts in their respective fields will bring the story of Kuldīga’s UNESCO World Heritage site to life through engaging and insightful storytelling:
- Sintija Vītoliņa is the UNESCO World Heritage Site Manager for Kuldīga’s Old Town and was a key member of the team that secured the town’s inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Having researched the treasures of Kuldīga’s Old Town for more than 12 years, she shares not only fascinating stories but also unique insights and little-known facts about the site.
- Krista Jansone is a culture and tourism communications professional with 15 years of experience. Specializing in immersive storytelling, she has spent the past six years leading city expeditions that transform historical facts into memorable and deeply personal experiences.
