Community Festival “Meadow”: Pļavu Street Community Gathering and Engagement Event

2. June, 2026

On Sunday, June 21, as part of the “Liepāja – European Capital of Culture 2027” programme, the community festival “Pļava” will take place at the cultural venue “Sventāja” in Liepāja. During the festival, residents of Pļavu Street will be invited to participate in enhancing the street’s visual environment, attend educational lectures, and take part in creative workshops and practical sessions on the everyday use of meadow plants, the preparation of medicinal herbal teas, and sauna traditions.

Why is there a Pļavu Street in Liepāja? Did you know that the place where people go about their daily lives today was once home to rolling meadows and grazing livestock? This story is part of our city’s heritage and the identity of our street. This summer, we invite you to bring that story back to life! We want Pļavu Street to bloom not only with flowers, but also with the joy of people coming together, the strength of community, and a shared sense of belonging. We invite every resident and business owner to join the initiative – tidy up the area in front of your home or business, place a flower pot outside, create your own little floral oasis, and become part of a shared story!

On Sunday, June 21, from 12:00 to 15:00 residents are invited to gather at the Cultural Site “Sventāja”, located at 14A Pļavu Street, Liepāja, to celebrate the story of Pļavu Street, discover the richness of meadow plants, and create something beautiful together.

  • 12:00 – Aspiring sauna specialist Lāsma Boikova will reveal the healing power of plants in her lecture “The Use of Meadow Plants and Trees in the SPA Industry and Sauna Culture”. She will introduce herbal steam bags and infusions, and invite participants to experience a dry sauna demonstration.
  • 13:00 – Linguist Daiga Straupeniece will take participants on an engaging journey through flower names and their place in our lives in her lecture “Flower Names in Personal Names.”
  • 14:00 – Botanist Lauma Veita will present her lecture “The Taste of the Meadow” explaining how meadow plants can enrich our daily meals and inviting everyone to sample them.

Throughout the day, creative workshops dedicated to meadow flowers will take place.

We believe that a strong community begins with a single conversation, a single encounter, and a single flower planted together. That is why we also invite the residents and business owners of Pļavu Street to contribute to the programme with their own ideas, stories, and initiatives.

Come and join us as we meet, connect, and make Pļavu Street bloom – both literally and figuratively!
