On Wednesday, April 29, as part of the Liepāja 2027 activities, a Culture Breakfast was held at the Vērgale Culture Center, South Kurzeme region. During this event, at the participants’ proposal, the focus was on community involvement in event planning and organization, as well as volunteer participation in the event process.
Inta Šoriņa, Chairperson of the Board of the Foundation “Foundation Liepāja 2027” introduced the participants to current activities in the regions, regional cooperation and current developments within the Liepāja 2027 programme.
Daina Vanaga and Sendija Mizēna, representatives of the association “Radošā Vērgale,” shared valuable insights on leadership, community engagement, and the importance of public participation in organizing various activities. As the representatives of “Radošā Vērgale” noted, the involvement of every member of the local community is essential, and often we don’t even realize that even relatively small support can be the beginning of a community tradition.
Meanwhile, Artūrs Palsāns, Līga Druvaskalna, and Jānis Druvaskalns introduced attendees to the Vārme “phenomenon” – practical steps and activities that can be implemented when the community actively engages, collaboratively generates ideas, and works together for the good of the community. Moreover, they encourage every community to publicly celebrate what has been achieved in their neighbourhood and to promote their activities to the wider public, thereby fostering even greater resident engagement, attracting supporters, and encouraging the implementation of initiatives within their own communities.
Justīne Rusakova, Public Participation Project Manager, and Izabella Džeriņa, Volunteer Coordinator at the Foundation “Foundation “Liepāja 2027″”, shared insights on community engagement, volunteer opportunities, and practices within the Liepāja 2027 context. The event’s success stories were complemented by members of the Liepāja 2027 volunteer movement, who provided practical insights into getting involved in the events of Liepāja – European Capital of Culture 2027.
The project “Liepāja – European Capital of Culture” is implemented by the foundation “Nodibinājums Liepāja 2027” with funding provided by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Latvia, the City of Liepāja, and the municipalities of South Kurzeme and Kuldīga.
