Invitation for Creative Practitioners to Apply for a Residency in Kuldīga Municipality

2. April, 2026

The residency “Notes on the Margins” is now open for applications from creative practitioners, inviting them to engage in the exploration and development of the local cultural landscape.

This year marks the sixth edition of the creative residency in the Kuldīga region. In August, it will bring together practitioners from both Latvia and abroad in Skrunda, Nīkrāce, Rudbārži, Padure and Alsunga. The theme for this year is “Illustrated Stories”.

As part of the residency, participants will spend a month living in one of the locations within Kuldīga Municipality, becoming acquainted with the local culture and its residents, and focusing their creative work on stories from local communities — historical events, myths and legends — interpreting and developing them through various creative forms. Every town, village or family has its own distinctive stories — tragic, humorous, mysterious or historically significant — often tied to particular individuals and reflecting the social, political, religious and cultural contexts of different eras.

Creative expression may take many forms, including drawing, painting and photography, as well as video, sculpture, dramaturgy, musical composition, writing and illustration, among others. The outcomes of the residency may include exhibitions, printed publications, photographic series, plein air works, compositions or staged video narratives that capture locations significant to the stories. At the conclusion of the residency in September, participants will present their work to the public.

The aim of the residency is to bring together representatives from different creative fields and local residents in a shared creative process, fostering the exploration and research of local cultural heritage. The project strengthens the involvement of creative practitioners in Kurzeme, particularly in Kuldīga Municipality, promotes the exchange of knowledge and experience, and supports international collaboration between Latvian and foreign artists.

The project “Notes on the Margins” is implemented within the framework of the Liepāja – European Capital of Culture 2027 programme, with funding from the Liepāja City Municipality, South Kurzeme Region Municipality, Kuldīga Region Municipality, and the Ministry of Culture. The project is supported by JSC “CleanR Grupa” as the primary partner for environmental education and sustainability, as well as by the mobility partner, the transportation company “Lux Express Latvia” Ltd.

The project is developed in collaboration with municipal cultural sector specialists and independent curator Maija Rudovska.
