From 17 to 20 March, Inta Šoriņa, Chair of the Board of the Liepāja 2027 Foundation, represented Liepāja 2027 in Tokyo, Japan, where the EU–Japan Fest “34th General Committee Meeting” took place. The event brought together 23 representatives from 12 European countries. Over the course of several days, meetings were held with cultural sector leaders, artists, institutions and decision-makers from across Europe and Japan.
The experiences of these days once again confirmed how many different ways there are to speak about culture — from contemporary art and international collaboration projects to traditional knowledge, craftsmanship and community engagement. The Japanese approach was particularly inspiring: respect for tradition, sustainability, and the ability to create a profound experience through simplicity.
The EU-Japan Fest is a collaborative cultural exchange initiative between the European Union and Japan, emphasizing the promotion of multicultural awareness and cooperation. Annually, the organization lends support to Japan-related programs, spanning concerts, music events, theatre performances, art exhibitions, literary events, and more, held in existing and future European Capitals of Culture. The fundamental goal of the EU-Japan Fest is to cultivate cultural understanding, dialogue, and cooperation between Europeans and Japanese.
Meetings with international partners and representatives of major organisations and institutions opened up new opportunities for future collaborations, both in the cultural sphere and more broadly. Liepāja 2027 was noticed and highly appreciated in Japan — we received positive feedback and strong interest in further cooperation.
