Liepāja invites residents and visitors to an evening walk, “Illuminated Liepāja: Deliberate Modesty”, which over four nights will allow participants to see the familiar cityscape in an unusual way — transformed by light. This year’s light walk will illuminate both sides of the Trade Canal, stretching from the Tram Bridge to the Loču Tower. Installations will also be visible in the city centre, where streets, buildings, and squares will become a stage for creative installations, projections, and light stories.
The walk this year is inspired by Liepāja’s thematic line as the European Capital of Culture, “Deliberate Modesty.” The light installations will highlight climate and sustainable development issues, encouraging participants to reflect on everyday habits and their impact on the environment. A special focus will be placed on the Baltic Sea, which is both a source of pride and responsibility for Liepāja.
For the first time in the history of the Light Walk, visitors will be treated to a large-scale laser show, while the installations will feature a wide variety of lighting techniques. Several installations will be interactive, inviting participation from both residents and visitors alike.
Light will become a means of exploring balance and care, starting with small, conscious steps. Sea monsters, plants, and other maritime inhabitants, carried by the wind, will seem to emerge from the water as mysterious silhouettes, moving projections, or colourful light accents, allowing the imagination to dive into the usually hidden underwater world.
Local businesses will also take part in the walk, illuminating their windows with coloured lights and projecting images onto their building façades, adding to this year’s route. The evening walk can also be combined with a culinary treat: restaurants and cafés in Liepāja will offer specially created “wind cakes” for the occasion. For those curious to learn more, free guided tours will be available, providing insight into the locations and buildings hosting the light installations.
“Illuminated Liepāja: Deliberate Modesty” invites residents and visitors to experience the city transformed by light artists over four evenings — 18, 19, 20, and 21 March, from 7.00 pm to 11.00 pm.
The walk is organised by the Liepāja Culture Department in collaboration with SIA “UNTITLED”.
