The 6th Karosta Festival has kicked off on the first weekend of June in the Awakening Garden.
It has already welcomed artists who are busily creating new projects. Italian artist Daniela Nasoni is transforming a storage container at the “Hope for Children” day centre in Karosta into a beautiful environmental piece, inspired by Latvian folk tales that she read, to bring joy to the children of Liepāja.
Meanwhile, in the Karosta Prison, Spanish artist Clara Cabrera is crafting an installation that combines painting techniques with LED lights.
Monta Krafte, head of the “Karosta Rescue Society” (KGB) and the festival's organizer, is also contributing her artistic talents with an installation titled “ILGAS” in one of the prison cells.
In Redan, Agrita Cimermane is creating a stone mass environmental installation, and Andris Kreicburgs is assembling a large-scale piece with a powerful message dedicated to the festival's theme, “Second Chance.”
Lāsma Gailīte reflects on her digitized reproduction of “Dark Waters” at Redan: “Pollution isn't a problem with a simple fix. We're all responsible—customers, manufacturers, vendors of goods and services alike. Each of us has a role to play.”
Igors Ničajs from the Karosta Rescue Society contributes with his piece “Free Iron.”
This year, the festival collaborates with “Liepāja RAS” waste management company, whose creative team has prepared an environmental object named “The Cover of Creation,” inspired by the theme “Second Chance.”
Young people from Liepāja and South Kurzeme schools have created “Birds and Insects,” also displayed at Redan. Festival organizers express gratitude to the teachers who motivated over 100 young participants to raise awareness about pollution through art made from reusable materials. These artworks will be unveiled on Saturday, 8 June, with an opening train journey from Karosta Prison to all the venues, ending at Redan. Due to limited space on the train, visitors are encouraged to join the journey in their cars.
The day's activities include the Liepāja Puppet Theatre performance “Siren's Song” at Redan at 18:00, followed by interactive activities led by Lithuanian movement theatre actress Agnė Muralytė and Liepāja RAS staff.
The audiovisual performance duo, Valdis Skarevičs and Dāvis Kristaps Aigars, known as “Nobody and Friends of the Internet,” will transform discarded objects into musical instruments. Audience is invited to join the musicians in an interactive performance, creating unique soundscapes and rhythmic elements together.
At 20:00, Miks Dukurs and his band will perform at Redan, concluding with a fire show by Andris Kreicburgs and a party with DJ Roadchanger. The festival will wrap up on Sunday, 9 June, with a concert “PEACE” at 16:00 in the Karosta Prison, following a venue change for technical reasons.
The Karosta Festival is organized by the Karosta Rescue Society with support from the Liepāja City Council.
