A new cultural and environmental initiative, “The Salmon Song”, will begin this spring on the banks of the Venta River in Kuldīga. The project is implemented within the programme “Liepāja – European Capital of Culture 2027” and is conceived as a long-term cycle of events combining artistic activities, public dialogue and community-led initiatives aimed at protecting the river ecosystem.<\/p>
The first event — the public discussion “Spawning is not a buffet” — will take place on April 25, 2026 at 4 PM on the Venta riverbank at the end of Ventspils Street, opposite the Kuldīga viewing tower. The event will conclude with a campfire concert.<\/p>
The discussion will bring together local residents, environmental experts, artists and other interested participants to reflect on the balance between traditions, human interests and the sustainability of the river ecosystem. Its aim is not only to encourage dialogue but also to inspire concrete community initiatives for salmon conservation.<\/p>
As the project develops, the first initiatives proposed by participants are planned to be implemented already in autumn 2026, alongside the first concert on the riverbank. This moment will symbolically mark the transition from conversation to action and highlight the role of community engagement in safeguarding natural heritage.<\/p>
At the same time, work will begin on the development of a site-sensitive and environmentally sustainable performance space on the Venta riverbank. Architects, designers and members of the local community will be invited to contribute ideas for creating a cultural venue that can host concerts and public activities during the salmon spawning season.<\/p>
The project will reach its culmination in October 2027, when a cycle of three concerts over three consecutive weekends will take place at the newly established location. Alongside the concerts, visitors and residents will be encouraged to participate in activities related to salmon conservation and environmental awareness.<\/p>
With “The Salmon Song”, the experience developed by the Sansusī festival — connecting classical music and contemporary artistic expression with natural environments — is being extended to a new cultural territory in Kuldīga. The initiative aims to strengthen public awareness of the relationship between culture and nature and to foster long-term community involvement.<\/p>
The organisers invite the public to take part in the discussion and become part of an ongoing process that promotes sustainable thinking and shared responsibility.<\/p>
