Japanese artist Chiharu Shiota (塩田千春) is one of the most internationally recognised figures in contemporary art. She is known for her monumental, immersive installations in which threads, string and wire fill entire spaces, intertwining with everyday objects to create unexpected and powerful associations. Shiota’s works speak of memory, identity, bodily experience and the meaning of place.<\/p>
In many cultures, weaving carries stories – memories, experiences and identity held within patterns. In Latvia, weaving is closely tied to passing knowledge and traditions from one generation to the next, with each thread forming a link between past, present and future. In the “Fabrics of Reality”, local Liepāja residents are encouraged to share what gives them strength, the traditions that made them who they are, and messages they wish to pass on. These words, thoughts, memories and hopes are woven into a single rope, one that connects and supports.<\/p>
